Patch Notes #42 - weekly gaming digest
Welcome to the 42nd edition of Patch Notes, let’s get this bad boy going.
This edition will cover the week from September 22 to September 28.
What caught my attention this week
I've been playing a bit of Hades II and thoroughly enjoying it. Note that I haven’t played the first one! This new game is excellent in every aspect. It deserves all the scores and praise.
Apart from that, here’s an interesting piece from the creator of Prince of Persia himself for you to enjoy!
A platform-jumping prince. Jordan Mechner
TLDR:
Jordan Mechner, creator of Prince of Persia, considers the Apple II version the most personally meaningful, as he programmed it entirely by himself over a three-year period (1986-1989).
The 1990 DOS/Windows version became the most remembered and influential, featuring improved graphics and sound, and serving as the foundation for most subsequent ports. The Super Nintendo version (1992) stood out as exceptional, expanding the original 12 levels to 20 with new enemies and music, giving Mechner the unique experience of being surprised by his own game. The Macintosh port, though delayed nearly two years, ultimately became the #1-selling Mac game and helped revive the series’ overall commercial success. Mechner concludes that most players’ favourite version is whichever one they played extensively during their formative years.

Documentation reveals planned features like an Adrenaline System, where adrenaline would act as a finite resource granting abilities such as healing, boosted damage, slower time, and increased movement speed. Silent Hill F review: a gorgeously grotesque spin-off that fascinates despite its flaws. VG Chronicles
Silent Hill F is a Japan-themed spin-off following high schooler Hinako Shimizu as she navigates a fog-shrouded town filled with grotesque monsters and a troubled family life. The game emphasizes melee combat more than previous Silent Hill entries, with both finite and infinite-durability weapons depending on whether players are in the real world or the alternate world. Visually, the game excels with detailed environments and unique creature designs, while puzzles and survival mechanics provide a mix of challenge and occasional frustration. Halfway through, the game shifts from survival horror to more action-focused gameplay, which may divide fans. Despite these changes, Silent Hill F is praised for its atmosphere, soundtrack, plot, and replay value, offering a fresh yet familiar experience for series fans.

Xbox has made its largest investment in Game Pass to date, signing deals with over 150 partners to expand the service’s catalogue, despite recent criticism over its value and sustainability. ID@Xbox boss Chris Charla emphasized that most developers whose games have been on Game Pass are eager to bring future titles to the platform. Critics, including Arkane and Larian executives, have debated Game Pass’s impact on the industry, while Football Manager boss Miles Jacobson noted increased player numbers from subscription exposure. Charla highlighted the importance of diversity in Xbox’s portfolio, showcased at events like Gamescom. Additionally, modded Borderlands 4 weapons are being sold on eBay, but due to encryption and costs, this grey market is largely unprofitable and more a hobbyist pursuit.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake director: players should accept Switch 2 game-key cards because the issue is speed, not cost. VG Chronicles
Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi addressed criticism of Nintendo Switch 2’s Game-Key Cards, which require downloading the game rather than storing it fully on the cartridge. He explained that the main reason for their use isn’t cost or storage, but performance — Switch 2’s internal SSD loads data much faster than cartridges, making it better suited for high-end HD games. Hamaguchi acknowledged player concerns but asked fans to accept Game-Key Cards as part of Switch culture, since they enable developers to bring more ambitious titles to the platform. His comments echo Ubisoft’s Rob Bantin, who also cited storage speed as the reason Star Wars Outlaws uses the format. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will launch on Switch 2 via Game-Key Card on January 22, 2026.
Microsoft will no longer allow Israel to use its tech for mass surveillance in Palestine. Kotaku
Microsoft has cut off the Israeli military’s Unit 8200 from using its Azure cloud storage and AI services after The Guardian reported the technology was being used to surveil civilian phone calls in Gaza and the West Bank. An external investigation confirmed violations of Microsoft’s terms of service, leading to the cancellation of access. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, said the decision was aimed at preventing the use of its services for mass surveillance of civilians, while stressing the company will still support Israel’s cybersecurity under the Abraham Accords. This marks the first time a U.S. tech company has withdrawn resources from Israel since the Gaza war began. The BDS Movement welcomed the move but urged continued boycotts of Xbox and other Microsoft products until all ties with the Israeli government are cut.
